International World Class Para Dressage Rider – Nicky Greenhill

“Horse riding makes me feel free. It’s the same as when I am working with Hebe my guide dog, using an animals eyes to see for me is exhilarating!”

Well!!! The Winter Championships were certainly eventful... We took Ed down to warm up and the venue had kindly given us an arena on our own as it's so so difficult for me to warm up with others, especially in an arena I am not familiar with. The arena was outside and it was blowing an absolute gail, so I asked Gary to walk him round for a bit as he was a little nervous with with the really strong gusts. Something fell over and it made him spook and somehow he managed to get his leg over the lunge line! He then scared himself even more and pulled Gary over as the rope got stuck on his hand!!! Thank Goodness Ed was caught quickly and the first aiders were quick to get Gary back on his feet and strap up his hand. Somehow we managed to still do our test, but strangely enough it wouldn't have been the best test we have ever done... I was still really pleased with him and he's proved that he's one for another day. It was then Hatti's turn and, as always, she tried her little heart out but she just felt a bit too tired for the higher marks. She still ended up a very respectable second, but we know now that between here and Waregem we need to work on her fitness so she can cope better with competing on more than 1 day.

I have to say a massive Thank You to everyone that rallied round to help get us and the horses home as Gary wasn't able to drive the lorry and to Melissa Smith Dressage for giving so much support in a slightly stressful weekend... and of course to my amazing husband, Gary Greenhill, who still managed to call the tests for me despite having just broken 2 bones in his hand and fractured his thumb!!! I couldn't do any of this without him! ❤️

Melanie SharpeWhat a challenging weekend. Well done to even compete at vale view as its very difficult familiarizing yourself in unfamiliar places when you are blind . You and Gary are an amazing team. Praying garys hand heals quickly. And glad you are all ok including ed and Hattie. Love to you all. X

Despite the revolting weather at Vale view today, Hatti won our qualifier class with 73% and gained the highest score of the day! 😀 She is just getting better and better the stronger she gets, so fingers crossed for the Winter championship class tomorrow. I am also riding Ed, which will be both their first Championships and the first time for me competing 2 on the same day. Gary Greenhill, I hope you've got your running shoes on!!! ...

Do you have any lucky riding gear or competition superstitions?

“No, I keep trying to find one, but Gary keeps telling me that the only thing that is lucky is if I ride well… I don’t believe him, so I keep on searching!”
