We have only owned Greg for 2 months now, but we have already done and achieved so much it feels like we’ve owned him forever… Hickstead didn’t go quite as well as I had hoped, but we still came home with a third and second respectively. It was the first time I had tried to compete in the double bridle and it has become apparent that with the other pressures in the competition arena it’s too much for Greg to compete in the double at the moment. He warmed up beautifully as I find it much easier to keep him collected and expressive in the double, but when we entered the arena I could feel straight away he became nervous and within about 2 minutes he started to panic about the pressure of the bridle. He has the most amazing character and the worst thing he has ever done as a form of evasion is stop! All very well, but not ideal to do it in the middle of the test! This happened twice which is very expensive, but fortunately the work in between kept our marks high enough for third place. We decided to take a step back on the second day as we knew we had to get his confidence back so I went back to the snaffle and rode for a clear round. Despite riding in a monsoon he didn’t put a foot wrong and we managed to gain an extra placing up to second.

We then had a week to work with Zoe and to work out how we were going to get some higher marks ready for the stiff competition we were about to face at Hartpury International. Zoe studied the videos and test sheets and we came up with a training plan. I am pleased to say it paid off as he was absolutely brilliant on all 3 days at Hartpury and we definitely stepped up a gear. We finished third, second and second out of a strong class of 11. I made a very stupid expensive mistake on the second day which cost us first place and we had a slight orientation moment on the third day which meant Greg stepped out of the arena, but other than that I couldn’t have asked for any more considering the short time we have been together.

The even more amazing thing is that we have made it onto the reserve list for WEG so training does not stop here as you never know…
