Fantastic News… I am very proud to announce that I am now National Champion. 🙂 Last weekend we set off for our long journey up to Vale View for the Para Winter Champs. As always it was absolutely freezing up there and for the first time in a long time we had to wrap up in non squad gear! The first day was just a Summer qualifier which we used as a warm up. For the first time ever Greg felt a little scared going in and considering he has never spooked in his life, he was determined that there were gremlins all around the outside of the arena! Despite a few marks lost from spooking we came second out of a strong class of 14.

Determined this wasn’t going to happen again, we got up early the following morning to do the arena walk, but he was quickly back to his old self and never looked at a thing. 🙂 Just shows you can never quite predict these animals… He warmed up beautifully, he is feeling so much stronger now and I am able to start asking him to give me a little bit more collection and expression. We went into the arena feeling fairly confident, but a couple of massive mistakes left Gary and I feeling very disappointed when we came out. In fact that’s a huge understatement, we were absolutely gutted! I knew that the bits in between the mistakes felt quite good and I just kept thinking if only that hadn’t happened we might have been in with a shot of winning. Anyway, after sitting in the lorry for a while feeling sorry for myself someone announced, that we had won! I believe my reply was, “Don’t be so ridiculous” and I made Gary check the score board more than once before we started to believe it ourselves. They were right and we quickly had to get Greg and I ready for the prize giving.

Everyone kept asking if I felt chuffed and the answer was “No”! I would always much prefer to come out of a test feeling that we did our absolute best even if it wasn’t enough. At the time I didn’t really feel like we deserved it, but one week on and I realise that of course we deserve it, Gary and I work so hard to get it right and even when it’s not perfect doesn’t mean it’s not good enough. If we can win on a day when we are not on top form, imagine what we can do when we are…
